The synagogue of Trieste, the central node of this policy, also suffered damage from the many air raids that rained down the city beginning in the end of January 1944. The building was located close to the courthouse, at the time the administrative seat of the Operation Zone of the Adriatic Littoral and therefore a presumed target, and it ended up being damaged during the major air attack of 10 June 1944: one of the fifteen bombs that struck the area around the courthouse caused a shock wave that shattered the windows and skylights, especially the huge rose window of the façade, a distinguishing element of the temple.
Later in the autumn, the wooden entrance door was also damaged; before it could be repaired by Nazi authorities, the broken door led to a number of books being stolen.
