This virtual exhibition "Traces of Jewish Memories. Synagogues and Judaica in the Julian March during the 20th Century" is part of the research project "Transfer of Cultural Objects in the Alpe Adria Region in the 20th Century" (TransCultAA), funded by HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) as part of the projects "Uses of the Past 2016-2019". It is directed by Christian Fuhrmeister (Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, Munich) and consists of research teams from Croatia, Italy and Slovenia.
As a geographic transit zone, the Italian Alpine Adriatic area was characterized by intense displacements of cultural assets during the 20th century.

The TransCultAA researchers will illustrate the complexity of this phenomenon at a transnational level. The aim of the TransCultAA project is to trace not only the tangible movement of objects, but also their role as symbolic capital. Accordingly, alongside ‘high’ art, this investigation also takes into account ‘low’ art and everyday objects, all of which played a role in developing individual, collective and national identities. This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 649307.
